VCA is seeking a boarded, or board eligible, surgeon to join our new specialty practice located in the same building and partnering with an established and reputable overnight emergency hospital in San Jose, CA. The surgeon will join an internist and oncologist with plans to expand services in the near future.
Get in on the ground floor and help us build what is surely going to become one of the top specialty practices in the region. With the tremendous support and resources of VCA, including a built-in referral base of over a dozen hospitals and an established overnight ER practice, the hospital has a great head start. If interested, you would be heavily involved in the building out of the surgical practice including the purchasing of equipment, training of staff and marketing of the business. Additional support already exists in a strong and established network of VCA specialty practices in the area who would be helping by providing already highly-trained and experienced staff, potential clients and any mentoring if needed. With close to 400 specialists in our network, over 75 boarded surgeons and over 60 specialty and hybrid practices, VCA has a unique understanding of specialty and surgical environments.

The Surgeon educates clients and referring veterinarians on, advocates for and strives to deliver the highest quality medical, surgical, dental and nutritional diagnostics, treatment, and preventative care to companion animals.
Skills and Qualifications
A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, or equivalent, from an accredited university.
Residency training with board eligibility or certification in specialty.
Licensure in good standing to practice in the state in which applicant is to be employed.
Professional comportment and appearance, with excellent interpersonal skills and a positive, friendly attitude.
The ability to make decisions and communicate clearly and effectively with fellow team members.
Respect for and willingness to work with clients and their pets.
A commitment to practicing the highest standard of medicine, upholding the veterinary code of ethics.
Job Responsibilities
Develop a rapport with clients and determine their needs and wishes; perform physical examinations and diagnostic/medical/surgical/dental procedures in a way that will deliver the highest quality care while minimizing patient stress and discomfort; recommend referral to or consultation with other VCA specialists when this is likely to significantly improve the diagnostic and therapeutic approach and service to the client.
Explain physical examination findings and communicate to the client a diagnosis of the petâs problems; generate and present a treatment plan for the pet to the client; educate clients on preventative health care, including vaccines and appropriate nutritional products; timely follow-up communication of the same information to the primary care veterinarian for further implementation.
Maintain client/patient medical/surgical records and make certain all necessary logs are kept up-to-date through established protocols; assist colleagues in follow-up and future management of the patient.
Establish a good rapport with referring veterinarians, including: timely professional and respectful communication; assistance in their professional growth and education through recommendations and interaction on referred and shared cases; ongoing development of a positive and professional working relationship; participation in Continuing Education involving the local referral community.
Assist in the development and training of the paraprofessional team to ensure the delivery of the highest quality care and exceptional client service.
Assist with marketing the services of the specialty practice through a variety of outreach programs, some of which include: making hospital visits to referring veterinarians, assisting with local CE meetings, answering all calls from referring veterinarians promptly, helping with production of hospital newsletters and case reports.
Assist with the training of any interns and residents, under the guidance of the Medical Director, if these programs are in place at the practice.
Stay up-to-date with new medical information and changes in veterinary medicine, fulfill VCA requirements for attending local VCA Continuing Education meetings and complete at least 30 hours of accredited CE per year.
Positively represent the hospital and VCA in the professional community and to the general public.
